How it works

The road to February

The NFL season runs from late summer to mid-winter, and every game matters because there are so few of them.

August

Preseason

Teams trim their rosters down to 53 players and test young talent in exhibition games.

1
Sept to Jan

Regular Season

17 games over 18 weeks, with each team getting one bye week to rest.

2
January

Playoffs

Seven teams per conference make it. The top seed gets a bye, and every round after that is win or go home.

3
February

Super Bowl

The AFC and NFC champions meet in one game for the Lombardi Trophy.

How points are scored

The offense gets four downs to move the ball 10 yards. Make it, and you get a fresh set of downs. Don't, and you usually punt it away.

6
Touchdown
Carry or catch the ball in the end zone
3
Field Goal
Kick it through the uprights
2
Safety
Tackle the ball carrier in his own end zone
2
Two-Point Try
Score again from the 2 after a TD
1
Extra Point
Short kick after a touchdown
END ZONE
